Assignments

Your primary ways of engaging in this course will be through 1) attendance and participation, 2) a series of short in-class writing assignments, 3) a longer in-class writing assignment with research, and 4) a group project. Assignments will be assessed primarily for content. I may give you additional feedback on other things (like grammar and writing style), but your grade will be based on whether you complete the assignment, cover the material accurately and express yourself clearly and thoughtfully.

QUICK WRITING ASSIGNMENTS These assignments are handwritten and happen during class sessions. In one, you’ll visually analyze one artwork on the spot (we’ll practice plenty in class together) and in another, you will compare two artworks.

ARTWORK EXPERT ASSIGNMENTS You’ll choose an artwork to focus on this semester and you will become an expert on it. Your first assignment will take place at the museum exhibition, where you will view and respond to your artwork in person using several provided prompts. During a visit to the campus library, you will research your artwork, compile and review several sources that will help you better understand your artwork and its context. Then, in class you’ll write an artwork guide introducing your artwork as an expert on it, done in your own voice and style (you will be able to bring notes to use).

MAKE AN ART MOVEMENT! You’ll form a group with other students in the class and then come up with your own art movement. You can use some of the art movements we’ve studied as inspiration. What kind of art would speak to our time? What does your movement stand for and against? You’ll write a collective manifesto and present it to us!

Note: All grades will be recorded and tracked on our Brightspace; that will be the best place to keep up-to-date with your progress in class.
